The Sum of Us is a tribute to Australia and the traditions of working the land and working together. This arrangement was initially inspired by the German folk tale The Musicians of Bremen. In this tale a group of animals come together in times of hardship, and despite their apparent differences, combine their skills to help secure themselves a brighter future. In this contemporary Australian interpretation of the tale, I have chosen animals strongly associated with the land, to reflect an aspect of Australian cultural identity ingrained in our folklore and history. This piece plays part of the tune Click go the Shears when fully wound.
