In 2006, Josie Kunoth Petyarre and Dinni Kunoth Kemarre began carving AFL footballers after watching their sons playing in the local team. Every weekend, Josie and Dinni joined their family to watch the AFL on their tiny TV at their remote outstation of Pungalindum. The AFL plays a central role in the lives of indigenous families in the desert, and Dinni and Josie love trying to capture the likeness of their favorite players. Dinni and Josie would not, however, say why they had chosen to depict Garry as a 'blackfella', suggesting that this is perhaps a big joke amongst their family.
