Takashimaya is one of Japan's major department store chains. When I was young I believed that I could find what I really needed in my life in a department store. Everything there was of high quality and beautifully presented. I visited Takashimaya obsessively, almost every day, until I realised I would never find what I was looking for there. Even so, the experience was hypnotic and seductive. For me, escalators symbolise department stores. I have interlocked the two elements of the escalator to imply the sense of conflict I experienced in my search.
