My art practice is about making creatures that engage the viewer to step closer and absorb the meaning contained. I aim for my work to present small everyday emotions but in different and curious conditions.
To do this I make quirky small sculptures that have life and emotion that people can enjoy. I want to combine the aesthetics of traditional impressionist sculpture with contemporary comic book aesthetic. Eye-catching movement, direction, excitement and intention can be achieved with subtle use of cartooning techniques.
The formal aesthetic gives the work lasting endurance, the comic book aesthetic is immediately engaging. My aim is to grab the best parts of a variety of influences and remix them. Currently I'm working with the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated ideas. I'm creating hybrid creatures which, while unrealistic, make sense. For example, a TV-headed family portrait, while absurd, is a comment on media and family priorities.
